When I think about the future of Christian County, I see it in the faces of our students who are stepping into opportunities that prepare them for life beyond high school. That’s why this week’s Workforce Wednesday spotlight is so special—because it highlights a partnership that is shaping futures in such a meaningful way.
The James E. Bruce Convention Center, known lovingly as “The Bruce”, has been at the heart of Hopkinsville since 2003. With its 40,000 square feet of event space, it’s where our community comes together to celebrate, connect, and grow. But what makes The Bruce shine even brighter is the way it’s now opening its doors to our Culinary Pathway co-op students, Alexis Herrera-Lovato and Alyson Grant.
Working side by side with Executive Chef Eric Fiedler, Alexis and Alyson are not only learning how to prepare meals, follow safety procedures, and serve large-scale events—they’re also learning what it feels like to be trusted, mentored, and expected to rise to the challenge. Under Chef Fiedler’s patient guidance, they’re gaining confidence in their skills and a true understanding of what it takes to thrive in the culinary industry. And with the leadership of Executive Director Kaleigh Stout, The Bruce has become more than just a venue—it’s a place that believes in our young people and invests in their future.
For Alexis and Alyson, these experiences are life-changing. They’re discovering the importance of professionalism, responsibility, teamwork, and communication. They’re walking away not just with employability skills, but with the belief that they can succeed. These are lessons that can’t be taught in a classroom alone—they have to be lived, and that’s exactly what this partnership provides.
And here’s why it matters so much: when students like Alexis and Alyson get opportunities like this, it doesn’t just impact their futures—it paves the way for the students who come after them. Each time a business like The Bruce opens its doors, it tells every young person in Christian County, “You are worth investing in. Your dreams matter. Your future matters.” That message changes everything.
I am so thankful for The Bruce and the difference they are making in the lives of our youth. This partnership is proof that when schools and businesses come together, we don’t just build a stronger workforce—we build stronger students, stronger families, and a stronger Christian County.
