Senior students in the Industrial Maintenance, Welding, and Automotive programs recently had an outstanding opportunity to step outside the classroom and into a real manufacturing environment. Yesterday, they participated in an SWK IGNITE Tour of Metalsa, gaining firsthand insight into the advanced production processes and career opportunities available right here in our region.
Trips like this play a powerful role in bridging the gap between classroom learning and the strong local career pathways waiting for students after graduation. Walking the floor at Metalsa allowed students to see the skills they are developing in their Career and Technical Education courses put into action every day. They observed modern equipment, learned about workplace expectations, and heard directly from industry professionals about what it takes to succeed in manufacturing.
This experience aligns closely with the CCPS Profile of a Graduate, which outlines six essential competencies designed to prepare every student for success in a changing world: Accountable Self-Starter, Innovative Critical Thinker, Collaborative Problem Solver, Empathetic Communicator, Adaptable Learner, and Career- and/or Work-Ready Professional.
The Metalsa tour particularly strengthened students’ growth as Career- and/or Work-Ready Professionals. By immersing themselves in an actual industrial setting, they gained a clearer understanding of the knowledge, soft skills, and professional habits employers value. Seeing real production lines and quality standards in action helped them connect their technical training to meaningful career possibilities after high school.
The visit also encouraged students to grow as Adaptable Learners and Innovative Critical Thinkers. Manufacturing environments constantly evolve with new technology and processes. Observing how Metalsa operates gave students the chance to consider how they might apply problem-solving skills and remain flexible in fast-paced workplaces. Working alongside classmates during the tour further supported the development of Collaborative Problem Solver skills as they discussed what they observed and considered future pathways together.
Experiences like the SWK IGNITE Tour help students collect meaningful artifacts for their Profile of a Graduate portfolios and prepare them for their eventual high school defense, where they will reflect on how these competencies have prepared them to impact their community and the world.
