There’s a right way to send off a group of seniors, and there’s a wrong way. The wrong way is to talk about their four years, hand them some flowers, and then go out and lose the game in front of everybody who came to watch them get honored. The Christian County Tigers did it the right way Thursday night.
Before a single ball got kicked, the Tigers took time to celebrate twelve seniors — a big class, a full one, the kind of group that’s been building toward this night for four years without necessarily thinking about it that way. And then, having done the sentimental part properly, they went out and took care of business, blanking visiting Calloway County 2-0 for their second straight win.
That’s back-to-back wins now for Christian County, which is exactly the kind of momentum you want walking into the stretch run of a season. The Tigers improved to 10-6 on the year, and they did it with the kind of balanced effort that makes a coach’s job a little easier — somebody to score the goals, somebody to set them up, and somebody standing between the pipes making sure none came back the other way.
Erick Hernandez handled the scoring duties personally, finding the net twice to account for every goal Christian County needed on the night. Jamiah Shanklin picked up an assist, doing the quiet work that turns a good chance into an actual goal — the kind of contribution that doesn’t always make the headline but always shows up on a coach’s game notes.
And then there was the other half of the story: the shutout. Seniors Preston Gentry and Stafford Winston split time in net and combined for six saves, slamming the door on a Calloway County team that came in looking for answers and left without finding any. There’s something fitting about that — on a night built around honoring the seniors, it was two of those very seniors standing in the goal, making sure the celebration didn’t get spoiled by a Lakers rally.
That’s the kind of night every senior class hopes for and doesn’t always get. Christian County’s got it now — a clean sheet, a win, and a season that’s trending in the right direction with six games still left to shape.
The Tigers are right back at it Monday, hosting Trigg County at home. Two wins in a row is a nice start to a finish. Three would start to look like a habit.
