Fifteen Wins, One Inch Short: Tiger Boys Soccer Falls in Region 2 Final

I have a confession to make. For most of my life, I didn’t really understand soccer. I’d watch a match, see ninety minutes of tremendous running about, and then the final score would be 1-0. I thought, “Is that it? All that effort for one goal?”

Then I watched a game like Wednesday night’s, and I finally understood. In soccer, a single goal isn’t a small thing. It’s everything. Every pass, every tackle, every lunging save is a fight over that one precious moment, and when it finally comes, it can decide an entire season.

Unfortunately, on Wednesday night it went the other way.

A Heavyweight Bout at Donley Field

The Christian County Tigers met host Madisonville-North Hopkins in the Boys’ Region 2 Soccer Tournament championship at Donley Field in Madisonville. If you’re picturing a graceful exhibition of the beautiful game, please adjust your expectations. This was a twelve-round title fight with shin guards. Neither team gave an inch, and both teams spent the evening throwing elbows, bodies, and just about everything else at each other.

The first half was about as physical as soccer gets, and neither side found much room to breathe. The two teams combined for three shots on goal in the entire half, with the Tigers getting off one of them. Offense was as hard to find as a parking spot at a home football game.

Head Coach William Bryan said afterward that he felt nerves got to his team early. This was a region championship, after all, on the opponent’s field, in the school’s very first season. If you weren’t nervous, I’d want to check your pulse. Coach Bryan’s message to his players was simple: keep battling. They did.

Beaulieu Stands Tall

The hero of the first half was senior goalkeeper Landon Beaulieu. With 11:13 left before halftime, he made a spectacular save to keep the game scoreless. It was the kind of stop where everyone in the stands gasps first and cheers second, because their brains need a moment to process what just happened.

Beaulieu finished the night with six saves, and for long stretches of this game, he was the wall between the Tigers and a much longer bus ride home.

The One That Got Through

Madisonville came out of halftime and turned up the pressure, getting off 11 shots in the second half. With just under 25 minutes remaining, the Maroons’ Yehoshua Golightly took a left-footed shot from the top of the box. It sailed just over Beaulieu’s outstretched hand and into the net.

That was the one goal. In a game this tight, it was enough.

Never Say Never

What I love about this team is what came next. Down a goal against the host team in a region final, the Tigers didn’t fade. They threw everything forward.

With five minutes left, Trieu Nguyen got his head on the ball and sent it toward goal, only to see it stopped at point-blank range. Then, with 2:35 to go, Anthony Evangelista rose up for a header off a corner kick and missed just left of the post. If you were in the Tiger section, you probably still haven’t fully recovered from that one. That shot was inches away from sending the game in a completely different direction.

The final whistle blew with Madisonville ahead 1-0, and the Maroons claimed their first region title since 2023. They’ll move on to the KHSAA State Soccer Tournament, and we wish them well.

Coach Bryan summed it up best. He said he was proud of how his team fought to the very end and that they never gave up. If you watched those final minutes, you know he’s right.

Five Tigers on the All-Region Team

The postseason honors gave us even more to cheer about. Five Tigers were named to the All-Region 2 Soccer Team:

  • Anthony Evangelista
  • Erick Hernandez
  • Nick Horst
  • Joseph Lopez
  • Mikel Ramirez

Congratulations, gentlemen. That recognition is well earned.

A Season to Remember

Let’s step back for a moment, because this is the part that matters most. The Christian County Tigers boys soccer team finished its inaugural season at 15-10. In year one, this team brought players together from two schools and turned them into one group. They won fifteen matches and reached the final of the region tournament. They also came within inches of extending their season.

That’s not a team that fell short. That’s a team that set the bar. Every Tiger soccer team that takes the field from here on will be chasing the standard this group set in the school’s very first season.

To the seniors, including Beaulieu, who played his final match like a man determined to leave nothing on the field: thank you. You were the first, and you left something to build on.

To the underclassmen: remember how close that was. Remember that header that just missed. Use it.

And to the whole community: the next time someone tells you a 1-0 game is boring, send them this article.
