At Crofton Elementary, even the youngest learners are developing the essential skills that will guide them on their journey to becoming successful graduates. In Mrs. Ridenour’s first-grade classroom, students are not just learning to read—they are learning to communicate, collaborate, and think critically. Through their engaging book clubs, these Rock’n Readers are actively practicing the skills of Empathetic Communicators and Collaborative Problem Solvers, key competencies in the CCPS Profile of a Graduate.
During book club time, students work together to read, discuss, and explore their stories, sharing their thoughts and ideas with one another. By listening to their peers and expressing their own insights, they are developing the ability to communicate effectively and with empathy. They learn to respect different perspectives, build on each other’s ideas, and engage in meaningful discussions—all fundamental skills that will serve them well throughout their education and beyond.
In addition to strengthening their communication skills, these young scholars are also becoming problem solvers. As they navigate their books, they work together to decode words, understand story elements, and make sense of challenging ideas. When they encounter difficult passages, they don’t give up—they collaborate, ask questions, and think critically to find solutions. This ability to tackle challenges as a team builds resilience and fosters a love for learning.
While these students may still be in first grade, they are already embodying the qualities of future leaders. By participating in book clubs, they are gaining confidence, practicing teamwork, and taking ownership of their learning—important steps in their journey toward becoming well-rounded, capable graduates.
Crofton Elementary is proud of these Rock’n Readers for their enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment to growing as learners and leaders. Their hard work today is preparing them for a bright and successful future!
