The Christian County Colonels basketball team is gearing up for an exciting season under the leadership of their new head coach, Dior Curtis. Coach Curtis, who recently stepped into the role, shared his thoughts and experiences during the team’s media day, highlighting the smooth transition and his vision for the team’s performance on the court.
Transitioning as the New Head Coach
Coach Curtis expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and support he has received. “It’s been great,” he said. “Coach Ivory has been fantastic in helping me get acclimated to the school, the team, and the community. For me, it’s been pretty flawless. The guys have been great – they’ve come in, they’ve been very coachable. Everyone within the school has been supportive, which has made the transition seamless.”
Curtis noted that the team’s willingness to learn and adapt has made his entry into the program smooth, laying a strong foundation for the season ahead. “Basketball-wise, the players have been learning a lot, and we’re excited about our opportunity this season,” Curtis added.
A Dynamic Style of Play
When discussing the team’s playing style, Coach Curtis emphasized the athleticism and versatility of the Colonels. “We’re going to be athletic. We’ll press a lot and mix up our defenses,” he said. “With players like Zion, Aiden, and Cam – who are tall and long – we have the capability to play trapping defenses effectively.”
Offensively, Curtis aims for a fast-paced game with a focus on efficiency in the half court. “We want to get up and down the court, but in the half court, we need to be smart and get the right shots. Every game is different, and adapting our style to each opponent is key,” he noted. Although new to 2nd region basketball, Curtis’s experience in the 1st region has taught him that “styles make fights,” and he plans to tailor the team’s approach to each matchup accordingly.
Getting to Know the Region and Upcoming Challenges
Coach Curtis acknowledged that while he is familiar with some of the top players in the region, having seen them play since their early high school years, he is eager to learn more about other up-and-coming talent. “I’ve seen some of these players since 8th or 9th grade, but there’s still a lot to discover about others in the region,” he shared.
Looking ahead to the Colonels’ schedule, Curtis is confident that they face one of the most challenging lineups in the region – and possibly the state. “Before I got the job, the schedule was already set. We start the season against Marshall County, the defending 1st region champions, who are returning a significant portion of their team. We also have McCracken County, last year’s 1st region runner-up, on the schedule,” Curtis said.
The early slate of games, packed with formidable opponents, will test the Colonels and prepare them for the district run later in the season. Coach Curtis’s emphasis on adaptability, athleticism, and preparation sets an optimistic tone for Christian County’s season, as the team and community eagerly anticipate seeing the Colonels in action.
The Christian County Colonels, under Coach Dior Curtis’s leadership, are set to make their mark and tackle the challenges of the season head-on.
