Hopkinsville High School student Alyssa Meyer, a Health Science scholar, is gaining invaluable hands-on experience in the field of audiology through her work-based learning placement at Hearing Services of Kentucky. Under the guidance of Brad Ison, a hearing instrument specialist, Alyssa is immersing herself in the science and care required to excel in this vital healthcare field.
Hearing Services of Kentucky, a family-owned business new to the Christian County Public Schools’ Fusion Work-Based Learning Program, is providing Alyssa with the opportunity to explore cutting-edge advancements in audiology while gaining practical experience. The partnership exemplifies the importance of businesses and schools working together to develop the next generation of healthcare professionals.
During her time at the practice, Alyssa is learning about the latest technologies that are revolutionizing audiology. These include Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids that allow users to connect seamlessly to smartphones, televisions, and other devices, streaming audio directly for an enhanced auditory experience. She is also being introduced to AI-powered noise reduction technology, which isolates speech from background noise, improving clarity in noisy environments. These advancements are transforming the way hearing loss is treated, making care more accessible, personalized, and effective.
In addition to her technical training, Alyssa is developing key soft skills that will serve her throughout her healthcare career. By interacting with patients and observing the compassionate care provided by her mentors, she is building her abilities as an Empathetic Communicator. Her work requires focus, adaptability, and problem-solving, helping her grow as an Innovative Critical Thinker and Career- and Work-Ready Professional.
