Tommy Wade made an immediate impact during his time at Hopkinsville High School. As a senior, he led the Tigers in scoring with an impressive 20.1 points per game, earning him the distinction of being named All-District, All-Region, and All-State. His outstanding performances on the court solidified his place as one of the top players in Kentucky during his era.
Collegiate and Professional Success
Wade continued his basketball journey at Murray State University, where he played from 1975 to 1977 before transferring to Southeast Missouri State. His talent and drive propelled him to a six-year professional basketball career overseas, where he honed his skills and gained invaluable experience that would shape his future coaching career.
A Legendary Coaching Career
Tommy Wade’s coaching career, which spanned over three decades, is nothing short of extraordinary. Beginning in 1986 at University Heights Academy (UHA), he quickly made history by leading the Blazers to their first-ever Class A State Championships in 1990 and 1991. From there, Wade’s coaching career soared to new heights, including roles at the collegiate level:
- Murray State University (1991): Coached the team to an Ohio Valley Conference Championship and mentored All-American Popeye Jones.
- St. Catherine Junior College (1992-1994): Guided the team to a Top-10 JUCO ranking.
- Missouri State (1994-1995): Continued to develop talent at the collegiate level.
- South Alabama (1995-1999): Led the team to back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Championships in 1997 and 1998.
- Kentucky Wesleyan (1999-2005): Coached in five consecutive National Championship games.
- Oklahoma City University (2005-2008): Guided the team to three straight conference championship games and three consecutive National Championship games.
- Oklahoma State University (2008-2016): Worked alongside Travis Ford, coaching in five NCAA Tournament games and mentoring National Freshman of the Year Marcus Smart.
- Jacksonville State (2016-2024): Closed his career by coaching the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including the school’s first-ever tournament appearance.
