Sinking Fork Fifth Graders Bring History to Life at Living Wax Museum

The gymnasium at Sinking Fork Elementary was transformed into a walk-through timeline of American history last Thursday as fifth-grade students unveiled their “Hall of Amazing American Heroes” Living Wax Museum.

For three weeks, students in Ms. Ipock’s English classes dove deep into the lives and legacies of notable American figures. Each student selected a historical or modern-day hero, conducted research, and wrote an informative piece tailored to a younger audience. With a focus on writing clearly and creatively, students worked to capture what made their subject significant in American history.

But the learning didn’t stop at writing. Each student also created a detailed tri-fold display filled with facts, visuals, and artifacts representing their chosen figure. On the day of the event, they dressed in costume and stood in character to really make their heroes come to life.

Throughout the afternoon, students from kindergarten through fourth grade made their way through the gym, stopping at each station to learn about American heroes such as Harriet Tubman, George Washington, Rosa Parks, Neil Armstrong, and many others. The living museum format created an exciting and interactive experience.

The event not only highlighted important moments in American history, but also showcased the creativity, performance skills, and research abilities of Sinking Fork’s fifth graders who really embraced the challenge of stepping into the shoes of these historical figures. It’s one thing to read about someone, but when you become that person—even for a day—you understand them in a much deeper way. It was a celebration of learning that brought history off the page and into the hearts and minds of everyone who attended.
