The Fusion Work-Based Learning Program continues to offer students real-world opportunities in career fields that align with their passions. Allie Petrakovitz, a Christian County High School and Gateway Academy Health Science Pathway student, is gaining valuable experience in the medical field at Heltsley Eye Care under the mentorship of Dr. John Heltsley.

Learning the Eye Care Profession

Through her work at Heltsley Eye Care, Allie is learning first-hand how an optometry practice operates. She is gaining practical experience in:

  • Patient care and customer service – Assisting patients and ensuring a professional, welcoming experience.
  • Optometric procedures and equipment – Learning how eye exams and vision assessments are conducted.
  • Office administration – Understanding the daily operations of a healthcare practice.
  • Medical terminology and documentation – Becoming familiar with the language and processes used in the field.

Developing Career-Ready Skills

In addition to her technical knowledge, Allie is also building essential employability skills, including:

  • Professional communication – Interacting with patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Attention to detail – Ensuring accuracy in patient records and procedures.
  • Time management and efficiency – Balancing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced setting.
