Brayden Toomey Gains Automotive Experience Through Work-Based Learning at Osteen’s Collision

Brayden Toomey, a senior at Hopkinsville High School and a Gateway Automotive Pathway scholar, is gaining invaluable hands-on experience at Osteen’s Collision, a family-owned business dedicated to auto repair and restoration. Under the guidance of George Osteen, owner and supervisor, Brayden is connecting his classroom learning with practical, real-world applications in the automotive industry.

At Osteen’s Collision, Brayden is involved in a variety of tasks, including auto repair, oil changes, brake work, and replacing damaged parts. He also assists in restoring vehicles to like-new condition after motor vehicle crashes, gaining skills in auto body repair alongside engine repair. Beyond technical expertise, Brayden supports the shop by working on insurance claims, detailing vehicles, and interacting with customers, where he hones his communication and problem-solving skills to provide efficient and effective solutions.

This experience is helping Brayden develop not only technical abilities but also essential soft skills critical for workplace success. These include:

  • Professional communication: Talking with customers and ensuring their needs are met.
  • Problem-solving: Addressing automotive issues efficiently while collaborating with his supervisor.
  • Accountability and reliability: Managing repairs and tasks with a focus on quality and timeliness.

Brayden’s placement at Osteen’s Collision aligns with the Profile of a Graduate competencies emphasized by Christian County Public Schools. He is exemplifying what it means to be a Career- and Work-Ready Professional, building both technical and employability skills that will serve him well in his future career.

Osteen’s Collision, a new partner in the Fusion Work-Based Learning Program, has found the experience of hosting a student to be a positive one. George Osteen shared his enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that Brayden’s contributions have been valuable and that he looks forward to potentially mentoring another co-op student in the future.

Christian County Public Schools extends its gratitude to Osteen’s Collision for their commitment to mentoring and preparing students for the workforce.
