From the hardwood at Christian County High School to the national stage, Derrell Bateman’s journey continues to inspire those cheering him on back home. The former Colonel standout is now a national champion, helping lead Trinity Valley Community College to victory in the 2025 NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship with a 69-61 win over Connors State.
While Bateman didn’t see action in the title game, his contributions across the season helped pave the way to the Cardinals’ historic success. Appearing in 34 games, he brought energy, defense, and heart every time he stepped on the court, averaging 2.2 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. His season-high performance came on February 5th when he dropped 13 points against Kilgore College—a reminder of the impact he’s capable of making when called upon.
But Derrell’s story is about more than just stats—it’s about perseverance, teamwork, and building a future. His dedication to his game, his teammates, and his education has created a foundation for long-term success. Whether he’s pushing himself in the gym or focusing on personal growth, Derrell is setting an example for younger athletes watching from Christian County and beyond.
His journey from local standout to national champion is a powerful testament to the values we hold dear in Christian County—hard work, humility, and heart. Derrell’s triumph is shared by all who watched him grow up here, who cheered him on in Colonel blue, and who now celebrate his continued success at the next level.
Congratulations, Derrell. Your hometown is proud of you—not just for the banner you helped raise, but for the man you’re becoming every step of the way.
