Congratulations to Hopkinsville High School’s Charles Maddux on his acceptance into the prestigious Gatton Academy! Located on the campus of Western Kentucky University, Gatton Academy offers high school students the opportunity to engage in a rigorous curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Maddux joins fellow Hopkinsville High School classmate Adelaide Ogilvy in this year’s class, marking a proud moment for their school and community. The Gatton Academy provides a unique residential program for bright, highly motivated Kentucky high school students who have demonstrated interest in pursuing advanced careers in STEM fields.
The mission of The Gatton Academy is to nurture students’ creativity, curiosity, reasoning ability, and self-discipline through a supportive environment. This is achieved through the companionship of like-minded peers, university-level courses, faculty-led research, and study abroad opportunities designed to prepare them for leadership roles within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Furthermore, The Gatton Academy aims to bolster Kentucky’s ability to compete in a knowledge-based economy by increasing the number of scientists and engineers with strong ties to the state.
“It is a pleasure to welcome these students to The Gatton Academy,” stated Dr. Julia Roberts, Executive Director of The Gatton Academy and Mahurin Professor of Gifted Education. “The young people in Gatton’s Class of 2026 represent Kentucky in many ways, carrying out the goal of The Gatton Academy to enable Kentucky’s exceptional young scientists and mathematicians to learn in an environment that offers advanced educational opportunities and develop as future leaders for the Commonwealth.” To read more about Gatton Academy, visit WKU.edu.
