Colonels Show Fight, Continue Building Chemistry in First Loss of Season

The Christian County Colonels took the field Saturday with momentum on their side, but a few early miscues proved costly in a 5-3 loss to South Warren, marking the team’s first setback of the season.

Despite the loss, the Colonels showed exactly why this team has the potential to be special. With a mix of talent, resilience, and emerging leadership, Christian County continues to build its identity as the season gets underway.

South Warren capitalized early, turning a pair of fielding errors into three unearned runs across the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. While the scoreboard favored the Spartans early, the Colonels never wavered.

In the top of the fourth inning, Christian County’s offense came alive.

Gage Montes reached base to start the rally, followed by a Gavin Mitchell single that put immediate pressure on the defense. Sebastian Dazey delivered with a one-out RBI single to get the Colonels on the board, and moments later, Chase Fort came through in a big way—driving in two runs to tie the game at 3-3.

It was a glimpse of what this lineup can be when everything starts clicking.

South Warren responded in the fifth inning with a two-run home run that ultimately proved to be the difference. Still, the Colonels continued to compete and showed flashes of a team that is learning how to win together.

One of the biggest bright spots came on the mound.

After South Warren loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth inning, Dylan Sweeney stepped in and shut the door—retiring three straight batters to keep the Colonels within striking distance. It was a moment that highlighted both composure and confidence under pressure.

Christian County had one more opportunity in the seventh.

Back-to-back singles from Andrew Mayes and Layton Creamer gave the Colonels runners on the corners, and a walk by Sweeney loaded the bases with two outs. With the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run on base, the Colonels were right where they wanted to be—but the comeback fell just short.

Offensively, the Colonels showed balance, with five different players recording hits. Fort led the way with two RBIs, while Dazey added an RBI and a run scored.

On the mound, Nolan Young battled through four innings, allowing just one earned run, while Mitchell and Sweeney provided relief efforts that kept the game within reach.

While the loss may sting, it also serves as a learning moment early in the season.

This is a team still building chemistry—learning how to play together, trust one another, and clean up the small details that can change the outcome of close games. And if Saturday’s fight is any indication, the Colonels are moving in the right direction.

Christian County (2-1) will look to bounce back on Tuesday as they travel to take on Madisonville-North Hopkins.
