Coach Clayton began his head coaching journey in 1984-1985 at Todd County Central High School, where he led the program to an impressive 16-7 record and two regional championship appearances. His success there marked the start of a remarkable career that would see him achieve success across multiple schools and states.

From 1986 to 2004 and again from 2017 to 2021, Coach Clayton served as the head coach at Hopkinsville High School, where he amassed a stellar 195-99 record. His leadership guided the Tigers to two undefeated regular seasons (1995 and 2004), four state championship appearances, and ten semi-state appearances. Under his guidance, Hopkinsville High School became a powerhouse in Kentucky football.

Coach Clayton’s expertise extended beyond state lines. He served as head coach at Franklin High School (TN) from 2004 to 2011, where he led the team to a 65-22 record and a state runner-up finish in 2008. From 2012 to 2016, he coached at Hillsboro High School (TN), achieving a 44-23 record and another state runner-up finish in 2014. His ability to cultivate winning programs in multiple states further solidifies his legacy as a football icon.
