It’s been a hands-on and eye-opening season for scholars in the Biomedical Science and AP Environmental Science pathways at Gateway Academy.
In Principles of Biomedical Science, students have been busy diagramming the processes of mitosis and transcription/translation to better understand how the body functions at the cellular level. Scholars also had the opportunity to hear from guest speaker Lyndy Cornette, who shared a powerful presentation on the genetics of dwarfism and her experiences living with a genetic disorder, giving students real-world insight into the human side of science.
Meanwhile, Human Body Systems students have been exploring the cardiopulmonary connection. Their recent labs included timing reflex reactions, measuring lung capacity using spirometers, and dissecting sheep plucks to examine the heart and lungs in action.
Over in AP Environmental Science, scholars wrapped up a unit on human impact on the environment. To apply their learning, they completed a creative and challenging cookie mining lab, where they worked to extract “ore” (chocolate chips) from a cookie “mountain” with the goal of making a profit while minimizing environmental destruction.
From genetics to ecosystems, Gateway scholars are staying busy in biomed—and bringing science to life.
