This past Wednesday night, a group of Gateway scholars had an unforgettable experience as they toured and observed the athletic training and sports medicine services at Western Kentucky University (WKU) before the university’s home game. The students were given a comprehensive look into the pre-game operations and had the opportunity to meet key members of the WKU athletic staff, including the team athletic trainer, physicians, and EMTs, as they performed collegiate-level pre-game injury care and treatment.
What made the visit even more special was that the tour was led by Ella Ford, a former Gateway scholar from the class of 2023. Ella was part of the first sports medicine class at Gateway and has since become a student athletic trainer with WKU’s football program. Sharing her journey, Ella reflected on how her time in Mr. Long’s class set her on the path toward a career in healthcare.
“Mr. Long’s class really helped with my desire to pursue a career in healthcare,” Ella said. “We visited WKU my senior year, and it opened up the possibilities for me to become involved as a student athletic trainer.”
The scholars not only observed the inner workings of the WKU training room but also spent time on the field and sidelines during pre-game preparations. This hands-on opportunity provided invaluable insight into the roles and responsibilities involved in sports medicine and athletic training at the collegiate level.
Mr. Long’s commitment to providing real-world exposure for students continues to inspire and prepare them for future careers. This experience was a testament to the program’s impact, showing scholars that pursuing a career in sports medicine and healthcare is achievable and fulfilling.
