Students from Gateway Academy had a unique and eye-opening experience yesterday as they attended the Construction Career Day at the Murray State Expo Center. Hosted by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Western Kentucky, the event attracted schools from across the region, offering students the chance to explore a wide variety of career paths in the construction industry.
The event was a major opportunity for Gateway students to see firsthand the numerous job possibilities within the field. From hands-on demonstrations of heavy equipment and masonry work to presentations on architecture, engineering, and skilled trades, students were able to engage with industry professionals and learn about the growing demand for workers in construction.
“Events like this are invaluable,” one Gateway Academy student said. “It’s one thing to hear about these careers, but seeing them up close and talking to the people who do the jobs makes it real.”
The expo featured everything from virtual reality simulations of construction sites to on-the-ground experiences with equipment like cranes and bulldozers. Many students found themselves fascinated by the breadth of opportunities available in the industry, ranging from project management and safety operations to technical work like welding and carpentry.
For Gateway students, the highlight was the chance to connect directly with professionals, companies, and trade schools that are shaping the future of construction. These face-to-face interactions provided them with insights into what it takes to succeed in the industry, including the educational requirements, certifications, and hands-on skills needed to thrive.
AGC of Western Kentucky’s Construction Career Day continues to serve as a bridge between schools and the construction industry, providing students across the area with essential exposure to the field’s vast array of opportunities. For Gateway students, it was an event that not only broadened their career horizons but also reinforced the importance of skilled trades in building the future.
All photos from the event were captured by students from the New Media Pathway attending the trip: Giada Belisle, Dejuantae Bell, Lainey McCoy, Alex Nelson, and Shamaur Hampton. To see the photos from the event, click here.
As these students return to their classrooms, they bring with them a new sense of excitement and understanding of how their education can lead to fulfilling and rewarding careers. For many, the experience may be the first step toward a bright future in the construction industry.
