At Gateway Academy, students aren’t just studying science and technology—they’re launching it! In a recent hands-on project titled “Rocket Power,” students applied the skills they’ve developed in Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes to design, build, and launch rockets. The experience has taken their understanding of engineering and physics to a whole new level, while offering real-world lessons in teamwork, problem-solving, and innovation.
The project started in the classroom, where students learned foundational principles like trajectory, propulsion, aerodynamics, and safety measures. Working in small groups, they collaborated to design rockets that were both functional and optimized for flight. With guidance from their instructors, they planned every detail, from rocket structure to launch angles, using critical thinking and creativity to overcome challenges along the way.
For many students, “Rocket Power” has provided a unique opportunity to put theory into practice. Each step, from conceptual design to the final countdown, reinforced what they’ve learned about math, science, and technology. Teamwork was also a key component of the project; students learned how to communicate effectively, delegate tasks, and support each other to reach a shared goal.
The highlight of the project was, of course, the launch day. As students watched their rockets soar into the sky, they felt a powerful sense of accomplishment and pride. The successful launches were a testament to their hard work and growing expertise in science and engineering.
Through “Rocket Power,” Gateway Academy students have not only learned about the mechanics of flight but also gained invaluable life skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom. The experience has sparked an interest in science and technology for many, inspiring them to explore career paths in aerospace, engineering, and beyond.
At Gateway Academy, students don’t just imagine reaching for the stars—they actually do it. The “Rocket Power” project is one of many examples of how CTE classes at Gateway Academy prepare students for bright futures through vibrant, hands-on learning experiences.
