The Hopkinsville High School Jazz Ensemble recently traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to participate in the University of Louisville Jazz Fest 2025, a prestigious event that brings together student musicians from across the region for performances, clinics, and masterclasses with renowned jazz artists.
The HHS Jazz Ensemble put on an outstanding performance, earning a rating of “Excellence” from the festival’s adjudicators. Their hard work, musicianship, and dedication to the craft of jazz were evident as they took the stage alongside some of the best young jazz musicians in the state.
In addition to their ensemble success, two students—Barrett Wittenburg and Theodore Marvel—stood out among their peers and were named “Outstanding Performers” for their exceptional contributions during the performance. Their talent and skill were recognized by festival clinicians, reinforcing the strength of the HHS Jazz program.
Beyond their performance, the ensemble also participated in a clinic with a professional musician, giving students the opportunity to receive expert feedback and enhance their jazz techniques. These types of experiences are invaluable for young musicians, providing them with insights into the finer details of jazz interpretation, improvisation, and ensemble playing.
The University of Louisville Jazz Fest is an annual event hosted by the UofL School of Music, welcoming high school and collegiate musicians to immerse themselves in jazz education. Students perform, receive adjudicated feedback, and learn from some of the leading jazz musicians and educators in the country.
The Hopkinsville High School Jazz Ensemble’s participation in this event not only highlights their musical talent but also showcases the continued growth and success of the HHS music program. Their “Excellence” rating and individual recognitions are a testament to their dedication and the strong leadership within the band program.
