The Hopkinsville Lady Tigers basketball team is heading into the upcoming season with renewed energy and a strong foundation of lessons learned from last year’s district championship victory. During the basketball media day at The SportsPlex, Head Coach Keith Leslie shared insights about his team’s journey, their evolving lineup, and what to expect in the season ahead.
Lessons from Last Season’s District Championship
Reflecting on last season’s success, Coach Leslie emphasized the importance of dedication and consistency. “Just the process of the hard work that you have to put into it. The accountability factor, doing what you’re supposed to be doing each and every night to obtain what you want,” Leslie noted. The district title underscored the value of staying committed and accountable, a lesson the team carries into their current preparations.
Team Dynamics and Strengths
Coach Leslie expressed enthusiasm about the way this year’s team has come together, noting significant differences from past teams. “I like the way they have come together. I like the way that their skill set is a whole lot different than some of our teams in the past. They are a whole lot quicker this year,” he said. Despite their youthful roster, the team benefits from a blend of younger players and experienced upperclassmen, making it a learning process for everyone involved.
The Lady Tigers’ Lineup
Coach Leslie provided a detailed look at the starting lineup, highlighting the unique strengths of each player:
- Lashanti Wilson: Set to start as the point guard, Wilson is known for her quickness and aggressive pursuit of the ball. “(She’s) real quick and pursues the ball outside. (A) great on-ball defender,” Leslie described.
- Alicia Davis: Referred to by her nickname “Little Bit,” Davis is expected to make an impact as the shooting guard. “You can’t say enough about her. Hard-nosed defensive player, shoots the outside 3, and a good playmaker,” said Leslie.
- LeQuioya Love and TaRia Sharber: These players will hold down the inside positions, contributing significantly on both ends of the floor. “Both of them are great rebounders and can score and finish at the basket real good,” Leslie highlighted.
- Laelah Watkins: The freshman standout has shown remarkable progress and adaptability. “She has picked it up a whole lot. (She’s) picked up our concept of what we want to achieve throughout the summer process and stuff like that. She’s real strong,” Leslie said.
Expectations for the Season
With a blend of quickness, defensive strength, and developing talent, the Lady Tigers are prepared to take on the challenges of the new season. Coach Leslie’s confidence in their growth and the lessons from last year’s district championship suggest that this year’s team will be focused, determined, and ready to compete at a high level.
As the season begins, fans of the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers can look forward to a team that blends youthful energy with experienced play, embodying the hard work and accountability that Coach Leslie has instilled in them.
