Profile of A Graduate: Erwin Macario

Profile of A Graduate: Erwin Macario

Christian County Public Schools (CCPS) emphasizes preparing students for life after graduation through the “Profile of a Graduate” framework. This program focuses on developing key skills like accountability, critical thinking, and communication. Erwin Macario, a senior at Christian County High School, recently gave a defense that showed how these skills have shaped him.

From Guatemala to Hopkinsville
Erwin shared his story of moving to the U.S. from Guatemala at the age of 12. Adjusting to life in Hopkinsville came with challenges, including learning English and repeating fifth grade. Despite the difficulties, Erwin has thrived, both academically and personally. He now works at Eagle Construction through a co-op program and has spent summers with Monarch Painting. Outside of school and work, he enjoys drumming, soccer, 3D design, and fishing.

Living the Profile of a Graduate Competencies
Erwin credits the “Profile of a Graduate” competencies with preparing him for his future and helping him contribute to his community.

  1. Accountable Self-Starter
Erwin’s work ethic and discipline were evident in his Advanced Placement history project on the Great Awakening. While some students were upset about not being able to present their work, Erwin stayed focused on the value of what he learned and the effort he put into the project.
  2. Innovative Critical Thinker
At Eagle Construction, Erwin showed problem-solving skills when his supervisor asked him to calculate the amount of rebar needed for a foundation. Though unsure at first, he completed the task successfully, applying his math skills in a real-world setting.
  3. Collaborative Problem Solver
Erwin shared how working with his church band taught him to manage and work alongside different personalities. He explained the importance of knowing when to step up and lead and when to follow directions.
  4. Empathetic Communicator
Erwin highlighted his experience at the Hopkinsville High School World Fair, where he represented Guatemala and connected with people from Japan, Ukraine, Mexico, and Venezuela. Reflecting on his early struggles with English, he explained how learning to communicate in creative ways, even without words, helped him grow.
  5. Adaptable Learner
Moving to a new country at a young age required Erwin to adapt quickly. As the youngest of eight siblings and the first in his family to navigate the U.S. education system, he took responsibility for managing his schoolwork and grades.
  6. Career and Work-Ready Professional
Erwin’s job experiences have given him hands-on skills and a sense of pride in his work. He talked about painting ceilings in Princeton and working on renovations in downtown Hopkinsville, sharing how these projects made him feel connected to his community.

Looking Ahead
Erwin wrapped up his presentation by thanking Christian County Public Schools for giving him the tools to succeed. He plans to use what he’s learned to continue serving his community. “Serving in the community is a really good thing,” he said, showing his commitment to making a difference.

Erwin Macario’s journey is a strong example of how the “Profile of a Graduate” competencies can help students overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
