South Christian Elementary has taken a creative and exciting approach to boost student literacy with the launch of its new reading incentive program, Dragons Read. Introduced in January, the program encourages students to develop consistent reading habits by rewarding them for time spent reading at home each night.
Students are invited to log their nightly reading, earning “Dragon Bucks” based on the amount of time they spend with a book. These special rewards can be collected and saved, creating a fun and motivating system for even the most reluctant readers.
To further inspire participation, the top three readers in each homeroom are recognized monthly with a special prize—a trip to the school’s book vending machine, where they get to select a brand-new book to take home and keep. This exciting reward not only promotes reading for pleasure but also helps students build their personal libraries.
The Dragons Read program has already sparked excitement throughout the school, fostering a positive culture around literacy and encouraging students to discover the joy of reading one page at a time.
