Students Capture History: Final Championship Moment at Hopkinsville Gym

Basketball in Hopkinsville, Kentucky has always been more than just a game. It is a tradition rooted in teamwork, leadership, and the pursuit of something bigger than yourself. This season, that tradition was captured in a powerful way by the students of the Cinematography and Video Production pathway at Gateway Academy.

As Hopkinsville High School celebrated its regional championship in the final basketball game ever played inside the historic Hopkinsville Gym, media students stepped behind the cameras to document the moment for the community.

Students photographed the game, conducted interviews with players in their classes, and edited the footage into a short documentary that reflects on the meaning of the season and the legacy of Hopkinsville basketball.

The documentary follows three Tiger players — Jayon Bass, Jayven Battle, and Jonovan Leavell — as they share their experiences on the team and reflect on the journey that brought them to this historic moment. Through interviews, game footage, and still images from the season, the film explores the bonds built between teammates and the pride that comes with representing Hopkinsville on the court.

Using a Ken Burns–style storytelling approach, the student filmmakers combined moving interviews with photographs and game highlights to create a story that focuses on more than just the final score. The documentary highlights the dedication, discipline, and teamwork required to compete at a high level of high school athletics.

From early practices to the intensity of district and regional competition, the players discuss what it means to support their teammates, compete for their school, and chase the possibility of a championship.

For these athletes, basketball is about far more than points on the scoreboard. It represents brotherhood, perseverance, and the opportunity to be part of something that lasts long after the final buzzer.

The project also provided real-world experience for Gateway students behind the camera. By covering a major moment in local sports history, they practiced professional media skills including sports photography, interviewing, documentary storytelling, and video editing.
