The Hopkinsville High School Varsity Tigers clawed their way to a 7-2 victory over Logan County on Friday, using a fifth-inning surge and solid pitching to take control of the game.
Logan County struck first, capitalizing on an error in the top of the first to score an early run. But the Tigers kept their composure and found their rhythm late in the game.
Hopkinsville’s offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth when Chase Fort and Gavin Powell drew back-to-back walks and Gavin Mitchell was hit by a pitch — all three resulting in runs to swing the momentum in the Tigers’ favor.
Dylan Sweeney earned the win on the mound, delivering a strong five-inning outing. He allowed six hits and one unearned run while striking out seven and walking two. Gavin Powell came in to secure the save, capping off the Tigers’ solid performance.
Offensively, Sweeney led the Tigers with two RBIs, going 1-for-4 at the plate. Powell showed great discipline at the dish, drawing three walks, while Fort, Andrew Mayes, Sweeney, and Powell each tallied one hit. The team displayed patience at the plate, collecting six total walks on the day.
Logan County’s EJ Walker went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Cougars, while Drew McLellan and Noah Mosley also added two hits each. Despite their early lead, Logan County couldn’t keep pace with the Tigers’ late surge.
With this win, Hopkinsville continues to build momentum and showcase its ability to battle back and close out games with confidence.
