For Head Coach William Bryan and the Christian County Tigers, the work is starting to show.
Bryan and his coaching staff have spent the season building a team that plays with discipline, trusts one another and keeps applying pressure from one end of the field to the other. Thursday night at the Stadium of Champions, the Tigers put all of that on display in an 8-0 victory over visiting Hopkins County Central.
The final score looked dominant, but the Tigers had to work to break through early. The match remained scoreless until the 24:08 mark of the first half, when Leo Ortega took a pass from Nick Horst and found the back of the net to give Christian County a 1-0 lead.
Once the Tigers found an opening, the floodgates opened.
Christian County scored three more goals in less than three minutes as Ortega, Joseph Lopez and Dakari Harris each found the back of the net. What had been a scoreless battle suddenly became a 4-0 Christian County advantage.
The Tigers weren’t finished.
Victor Hernandez pushed the lead to 5-0 with 19:10 remaining in the first half, scoring off an assist from Lopez. Horst, who helped create the opening goal of the night, then got one of his own with 16:16 remaining to make it 6-0.
Fernando Ginez-Rojas added another goal with just 1:33 left before halftime, sending Christian County into the break with a commanding 7-0 advantage.
The offensive explosion showcased the kind of unselfish soccer Bryan and his staff have been working to develop. Goals were coming from throughout the lineup, and the Tigers were creating opportunities for one another rather than depending on a single player to carry the attack.
Christian County needed just one more goal in the second half, and Lester Macario delivered it. His goal early in the half pushed the lead to 8-0 and ended the match by mercy rule.
Ortega, Anthony Evangelista, Lopez and Harris all recorded assists during the victory, adding to a night in which the Tigers consistently found ways to put their teammates in position to succeed.
The work wasn’t limited to the offensive end of the field. Landon Beaulieu and Stafford Winston combined for the shutout in goal, completing a total-team performance for Christian County.
For Bryan, performances like Thursday’s are another sign of a team continuing to grow. The Tigers remained patient when the match was scoreless, took advantage when opportunities began to appear and continued playing together once they gained control.
Christian County improved to 6-3 with the victory, but the Tigers won’t have much time to celebrate. They are scheduled to return to the field tonight at Foundation Christian.
Thursday night, though, offered another glimpse of what Bryan and his staff are building — a Tiger team capable of staying patient, playing together and turning a small opening into a big night.
