Before Christian County took the court, senior Peyton Owens was recognized for a milestone that tells only part of her story.
Owens recently recorded her 1,000th career assist in a match against Madisonville-North Hopkins, adding another accomplishment to her career as a Christian County Tiger.
For Owens, however, the number represents more than a volleyball statistic. It represents years of work, leadership and a willingness to put her teammates in a position to succeed.
Coach Hardison said Owens is the captain of the team for a reason. Her leadership isn’t limited to what happens during a match. She has become someone her teammates can depend on — the kind of player who understands that being a leader means showing up, doing the work and helping the people around you become better.
In many ways, Owens is an example of the Blueprint DNA of what it means to be a Tiger.
The Christian County High School Culture Blueprint begins with Strength in Our Stripes, a commitment to belonging and community built around behaviors such as “Show Up,” “WE > me,” and “Respect the Stripes.”
For a setter, perhaps no phrase fits better than WE > me.
An assist only happens when someone else finishes the play. It is a statistic built around teamwork. Owens has now done that more than 1,000 times — putting a teammate in position to succeed.
But Owens’ story doesn’t end on the volleyball court.
She is also a senior in the Animal Science Systems pathway in the Academy of Agriculture and Skilled Trades, preparing herself for what comes after high school. That connection between success today and preparation for tomorrow is exactly what Christian County’s Blueprint is designed to create.
She is an athlete who has reached an impressive individual milestone. She is a captain trusted to lead her teammates. She is a student developing skills through her career pathway. And she is preparing for the opportunities that will come after graduation.
The Culture Blueprint describes three pieces of Tiger DNA: Strength in Our Stripes, Eye of the Tiger and Own the Hunt — belonging and community, a growth mindset and extreme ownership.
Those aren’t supposed to be words that simply hang on a wall.
They’re supposed to show up in our students.
Peyton Owens is showing us what they look like in action.
One thousand assists deserves to be celebrated. But the leader, teammate and student behind those 1,000 assists may be the bigger story.
That’s the Blueprint.
That’s the DNA.
That’s what it means to be a Tiger.
